Description
US Model 1812 Socket Bayonet. The blade shoulder is marked with a small "JB" next to a bigger "US" and there is what looks like a faint "I" to the front of the mortise
. Has a "T" mortise similar to the Model 1816 but this bayonet doesn't have a face flute and has an extremely thick neck (3/4"). The only socket bayonets I could find with a similar marking were all pre-Model 1816, however nothing exactly matched this, not in my books or through extensive internet research. It is in good overall condition with no rust, very light pitting scattered mainly on the topside, and the last 3/16" of the tip is a little hook shaped. Length of the blade measures 15 3/8" (15/16" wide x 1/2" thick) and the bayonet is 18 1/2". The socket is 2 15/16".
The muzzle hole is 27/32".
This possibly a US Cadet Model 1817 as mentioned in the book "Socket Bayonets of the Great Powers" by Robert Shuey. It says these are Rare and patterned after the Model 1816 but have a slightly shorter blade and no face flute. Robert Reilly's book "American Socket Bayonets and Scabbards" does not have a match to this bayonet. The reason I call it a Model 1812, that was the closest style I could find to this, but it had an "L" mortise on all that I could find. Any info is welcomed. Rare and odd bayonet, regardless.
