    Description

For sale is a Napoleonic Wars era British 1796 light cavalry saber. Here's a little back story on this particular sword: Pic1 - The serial number of the saber is seen here as 527.
Pic2 - the Crown over the numeral 1 proof mark; found on the early Model 1796 British Light
    Cavalry
    Sabers.
Note that this saber has no ornamental markings, and was most likely used by an ordinary
    cavalryman, rather than an officer.
This particular saber was purchased from an Estate Sale in Miami in 2009, from a local
collector. According to the previous owner, this saber was found in Belgium during the late
1800’s and was held in a collection in Northwest Germany. At the end of WWII, it made it’s
way into the US, perhaps as a “bring-back” from occupied Germany.
Condition is what you see. Dark patina, chatter on the cutting edge, but no bad chips or dings. Everything is fairly snug. There is a slight wiggle in the grip, but you rally have to try and the movement is just perceptible. Grip has wormholing and some leather loss, but is still solid and isn't going to crumble. Metal is all tight. No scabbard
    37 3/8" overall
    32 1/2" blade
    6 1/2" POB
Weight is just this side of 2 pounds. The real ones are very light compared to most modern reproductions. They were only made to cut through heavy cloth and people so sharp and fast what is what was called for.
