    Description

This is a very interesting piece from the Mexican war. It was bought in 2008 on eBay as you can see from the copies of the original eBay printouts. It was sold as, “1846 Mexican War musket brush and pick with documentation”.
The original EBay dealer described this item as “Mexican war, 1846-1848 Flintlock musket cleaner. This 162-year-old gun cleaner has a horsehair brush, a pick and its original chain. The total length of the musket brush and pick is 16 inches and is made out of brass? The cleaner also comes with two pieces of documentation with information regarding the gun cleaner and its original owner. The small piece of white paper has the words, “this cleaner used in Mexico by Andrew Jackson Crooks, Mrs. JH White, father”. On the other side is a small white piece of paper has the words, “this gun cleaner was used in the Mexican war by Andrew Jackson Crooks”. Apparently this musket cleaner was on exhibit at the Sewickley county historical exhibit in Pennsylvania and the final photo shows an exhibit ticket with the same information. This brush and cleaner is in terrific condition and it is hard to believe it is 162 years old!”
We did a bit of research and found a very interesting article on Newspapers. Com from the Pittsburgh Press, from October 6, 1918. The article is about a hero from World War I, who lived with his parents in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, which is northwest of Pittsburgh. The article says that the young man’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. John H White. And it says that the young man’s grandfather was in the Mexican war in 1847. That would make sense because the paperwork with this brass pick was written by Mrs. JH White and she ends her note with the word “father”. Mrs. White’s father would’ve been the young hero’s grandfather. All this makes me believe this has legitimate provenance.
The item originally sold for 1.99.
