Ca. 1830-1840 AMERICAN EAGLE HEAD SWORD WITH FINE CARVED BONE GRIP/.
A type in use through Civil War. One-piece bone grip with stable, tight hairlines (as shown).
The bronze pommel features a fierce eagle-head and the extended ferrule beneath
is decorated with leaves and a spread-wing
US shield surmounted by a patriotic
eagle (see photo). The sword has four etched
designs on each side, not easy to
make out, including one with a drum and possibly a flag. The blade is 35 7/8 inches long
with fullers on both sides. The grip has an extremely slight looseness, almost not noticeable.
