Antwerp 14, August 1814. My Dear Sir, I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter, thanks for the kind in which you are interested yourself in my concerns. I’m taking this opportunity of making a few remarks on Lord Lynedoch notes. I shall not attempt to follow his Lordship through this History of Brevet Ranks. The result of the attack upon Bergen-op-Zoom his Lordship Aid de Camp was promoted to the Rank of Lieutenant Colonel for carrying home the account of the unsuccessful enterprise. His Lordship says pretty plainly that my Claim to Brevet Promotion. My being in the Command of a Regiment, which by its bravery & discipline situation was the last to retire, and the only Regiment that did as a Corps after having mantaned its position with in the place long after the surrender to the Enemy, all of the two Regiments whose Commanding Officers were promoted for their services on this occasion. The only letter I ever addressed to his Lordship was a Report on the processed of the 33rd Regt. Attack. This report was made within forty eight hours after it took place. I believe I may venture to say it that some were never within Cannon shot of the Enemy. I shall close these remarks, between Lord Lynedoch & Major General Cook, the matter rests. Great 5-page letter.Great account of Major Edward Parkinson 33rd Regiment on his promotion and actions for the Siege of Bergen-op-Zoom, Holland March 8,1814 French victory and a defeat for the British. Total British losses for the assault 2,552 killed, wounded and captured; the vast majority at 2,000 officers and men capitulated. As 3,300 men had made the assault, the percentage of men lost, out of the total, stood at around 77% making it the highest rate of loss by the British Army in the Napoleonic Wars.
