Description
This listing is for one original antique leather and brass bandolier from the era of blackpowder weapons. We have not been able to identify this item exactly, so please read our description carefully.
This is a brown leather strap, 2.25

wide, with sturdy brass fittings. It appears to be a military bandolier (cross-body strap) rather than a waist belt. The oval buckle has facing fan or sun style decorations. This motif is repeated on the tongue tip. The leather band ends on two ring swivels. Attached to these is a rectangular wood and leather box reinforced with brass edging and ends.
The blackpowder cartridge box is closed by a leather flap also edged in brass. It has a prominent fleur-de-lys (symbol of the French Bourbon monarchy) on the face. A short leather strap secures the flap to a brass stud on the bottom of the box.
In the center of the strap are two brass escutcheons joined by three strands of brass chain. One escutcheon is a crown, the other a shield with a fleur-de-lys. This style of decoration was used even after France became an empire (and later, a republic) though without the fleur-de-lys.
Overall condition is Good considering the age and utility of the item. The leather has dried out and broken above the buckle, but the remaining is dry but flexible. The brass parts are in Very Good condition, mildly patinaed/worn but not damaged. See our photos.
We have some information stating the box might have been for cannon fuses and not musket cartridges? We’d like to know more about this piece. If you have information, let us know!
