    Description

Great letter dated New London, Connecticut, February 18, 1845 from C. Chew (likely Coleby
Chew, politician, shipping and business magnate) to William H. Law in Evansville, Indiana.
Two and a half pages, with some loss on the third page (about the size of a penny) that affects
some content, some fold separations and repairs with archival tape, but overall good condition.
Mentions business and personal matters, deaths of prominent men in the area, including Judge
Coddington Billings. Also mentions of possible war over Texas and Oregon: “We are
sometimes a little alarmed by the feelings displayed in Washington as to Texas & especially
Oregon. The war spirit seems to prevail among the western members particularly. What a set of
fellows to get together in Congress. Abuse of England seems to be one of the favorite topics of
the western members. If there should come a war out of either of these questions I should rejoice
to see these noisy fellows in the fight. And for my own part I shall join the Peace Society.”
    Thanks for looking.
