Jerome Bonaparte Robertson's Co., and signed by George Washington Poe, Paymaster General of the Texas Army. This printed form certificate dated November 3, 1836, and signed by George W. Poe, Paymaster General at Columbia, Texas. The certificate entitled Henry Patton, the sum of twenty four dollars for two months and twenty four days service from the 3rd of August to 24th October, 1836.
After graduating from Transylvania University in 1835, Robertson, a lieutenant in a company of Kentucky volunteers, offered his services in the Texas Revolution, arriving there in Sept. of 1836, and served one year.
He settled in Washington-on-the-Brazos, where he began a medical practice. He well known as an Indian fighter and served six years in Indian and Mexican campaigns. He was also on the first Texas to raise a company of men for Confederate service which would eventually become the 5th Texas Infantry. I have enclosed a brief history on him.
The certificate is signed by George Washington Poe (1800-1844), Paymaster General of the Texas Army.
"He moved to Texas in 1834, and served as a volunteer captain in the artillery. By November 6, 1835, he was with the artillery company engaged in the Siege of Bexar. On Dec. 30th, he was the acting adjutant general of General Sam Houston's army with the rank of captain and was stationed at army headquarters in Columbia, where this certificate was signed. Among his duties was supervising the construction of fortifications at Galveston and Velasco.
In March of 1836, Poe had been appointed as assistant inspector general of the army and commanding the garrison at Velasco, maned by 120 men that he had personally trained. Poe took a five cannon battery to join Gen. Houston's army in late March of 1836, and had joined Houston at Beason's Crossing on the Colorado River. He established his headquarters at San Jacinto on May 3, just after taking part in the Battle of San Jacinto, on the 21st of April past.
Poe was named acting paymaster general on Oct. 12, 1836, and was charged with the task of establishing a pay department for the Army of the Republic of Texas, to be based upon the that used by the U.S. Army.
Much more about him can be found on the Texas State Historical Assoc. where this information was gathered.
