    Description

1821 Pattern for British Canada Artillery Officers Sword Limerick, Ireland 1860s.
This very rare 1821 pattern sword was made by P. Tait & Co. of Limerick, Ireland for the Canada Artillery officers. This used sword and scabbard are in nice original as found condition, at an estate sale. The scabbard is missing the two screws that hold the throat onto the scabbard.
This sword is slightly curved with a single-fuller blade that is 32 inches long and is 38inches overall. The sword is inlaid on the ricasso with the gold (IRON) Proof mark inside a star. Besides traditional Officer's quality etching, the blade is etched with the “Canadian Beaver” and the words “CANADA ARTILLERY” surrounded by Fleur-de-lis etched on both sides of the etching. On the other side of the blade, it is etched with a “CANNON” surrounded by Fleur-de-lis etched on both sides of the etching. Sword does not have the “Queen’s Head” or the “VR Cypher”.
On the ricasso on the other side of the sword it is marked P. Tait & Co. Army Clothiers, Limerick. The writing on the ricasso is very weak and so hard to see, but you can make out “P. Tait & Co.”, “A” in Army”. “othier” in Clothiers” and “LIMERICK”.ON the top edge of the sword blade close to the guard, the blade is stamped“WARRENTED TO CUT WROUGH IRON”. The sword guard does not have chequering on the back strap.
Tait was an official supplier of Confederate uniforms to the south. Tait provided buttons and complete uniforms to the Confederacy during the American Civil War. To deliver the uniforms to the Confederacy, his ships had to run the Union blockade of Southern ports.
One of his ships, the “Evelyn”, managed to run the blockade five times
. Another of his ships, the “Condor” ran aground near Fort Fisher North Carolina and the famous Confederate spy, Rose O’Neal Greenhow, who was returning from Britain aboard this ship,
    drowned when her rowboat overturned,
as she tried to escape a union gunboat. She was latter honored with a Confederate military funeral.
Peter Tait was a great business man and he became the inventor of a new type of working practice, the production line.
He became mayor of Limerick between 1866 and1868. The town raised a clock in his honor. Peter was Knighted in 1867. Swords after 1867 were marked Sir P. Tait & Co. This sword is from the period of1850-1867. He left Limerick in 1875 and died in Russia in 1890.
    Question:
Limerick, Ireland was a hot bed of Fenian activity during the 1850’s-1860's.
“Fenian” was a term to describe the transatlantic partnership of the Fenian Brotherhood in America and the Irish Republican Brotherhood in Ireland and England. This sword could have been used in the Canadian-Fenian war. Since
the “Queen’s Head”, or the “VR Cypher”, which was used on British swords of this period, and is not on this sword and has Fleur-de-lis are on both sides of the blade. The Fleur-de-lis is usually associated with French Canadians. Does anyone know if this sword was for the British Canadian Artillery, or the Canadian Fenian Artillery, or the Canadian French Artillery?
